MDF and particle board
Engineered wood boards that can swell or peel in wet conditions. HERA vanities use solid PVC instead, so the cabinet body is not at risk from bathroom humidity.
What it means
MDF (medium-density fibreboard) and particle board are engineered wood boards. Instead of being cut from a single piece of timber, they are made by pressing wood fibres or wood chips together with adhesive into flat sheets, which are then covered with a laminate or coating to look like finished furniture. They are inexpensive, easy to machine, and perfectly good materials in dry rooms, which is why so much furniture is built from them.
The weakness is moisture. The compressed fibres inside the board behave like a sponge: once water or persistent damp reaches the core, the board swells, the surface coating peels or bubbles, and the damage does not reverse. Standard MDF and particle board will absorb moisture from the air alone, regardless of whether they ever get directly splashed, which is why the base of a vanity built from these boards is a common failure point in bathrooms.
That is the context in which the term usually comes up when you shop for bathroom cabinetry: the question to ask is not what a cabinet looks like, but what its core is made of. The waterproof alternative is solid PVC, which does not warp, swell, or peel in a humid bathroom.
In a Singapore home
Singapore is unusually hard on these boards. A typical HDB or condo bathroom rarely drops below 70% relative humidity even with no shower running, a hot shower briefly pushes humidity past 95%, and most bathrooms have limited airflow, so moisture lingers for hours instead of dissipating in minutes.
