What it means
A drop-in bathtub is a tub shell that is lowered, or dropped, into a surround built for it. The surround is a deck or platform, usually tiled or finished in stone, and the tub's rim rests on top of it. Unlike a freestanding tub, the shell is not finished on the outside, because the surround hides everything below the rim: no apron panel, just the deck.
In practice, a drop-in is one type of built-in bathtub. It sits in a custom-built surround but has the seamless feel of a built-in, which makes it a middle-ground format between a pure alcove tub and a freestanding bathtub. The result can look very polished, with the tub reading as part of the architecture rather than an object in the room.
The trade-off is permanence. Because the surround is constructed around the tub, fitting one or taking one out is renovation work, not a delivery.
In a Singapore home
Drop-in tubs are less common in Singapore than pure freestanding or built-in formats, and they usually appear as part of a full renovation, where a contractor builds the deck, handles the tiling and plumbing, and drops the tub in.
